What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?

Mr. May asked us to think about what discovery means. There are a lot of different answers to what discovery means, but I chose mine for a reason. I think discovery means to explore and find out things you have never seen before. It also means to see things differently than others. In my picture, I drew me looking at bugs in the grass. It probably looks like a whole different world down there. “Discovery” is most of the things I do.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

To make a professional arcade game it takes patience, and a great arcade game will provide ideas to make one for myself. The game I chose is Starballz. The company that created this game is Camadro, Inc. To play this game you destroy all the stars with the ball. To move the ball you click, and when you find the direction you want, you let go of the mouse. If it hits the stars, you get points. When you get rid of all of the stars you go to the next level and do the same thing. The rules of the game are below the game window so you can always see them. If I had to give this game a rating it would be around a 3 out of 4 . To win you shoot all the stars with the ball.

To build this game I would need laminated paper stars, tape, a basketball, and way better aiming skills! To build this game it would cost around $20.00: ball would cost $5.00, different colored paper would cost $5.00, lots of cardboard would cost $10.00. To buy the game it would cost about $40.00.

The name of my game is Starballz. Starballz is very fun. The URL address of this game is:

Design Brief

What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of our arcade game is Ski Ball for One or Two. It is a very fascinating game. The way you play this game is you roll the ball into one of the holes. The hole it lands in determines how many tickets you get. If you get enough tickets you get a prize. If you are playing with another person the person with the most points at the end wins. In case you forget the rules of the game, they will be displayed right smack in the middle of the board. This game is pretty hard. The rating would probably be a 3 star rating. The way you win the game is to get as many balls as possible into the holes. If you win the game you get tickets and a prize.

We had to briefly describe our blueprint - an orthographic design. It shows the front, back, and side on the blueprint. If you looked at it from the front you would see the directions, the name, the rules, the prizes and tape of different patterns and colors. If you looked at it from a bird’s eye view you would see cups and awesome tape. If you looked at it from either side you would see a gigantic hole and boxes with the Girl Scout cookie sign.

To build this game we need cardboard, tape, toilet paper tubes, boxes, containers, pen, tube, duct tape. To build this creation I think it will take about a month or so. It is very delicate and we still have to work out the kinks. The problems we foresee happening are we are worried that the bigger balls might not fit into the containers. This has been very fun!

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?

Praise: Colorful, easy to understand directions.

Question: Should game be tilted?

Polish: Railing to keep ball in may help; ticket dispenser is in alley to shoot.

Student Comment: We tried to make our arcade game, Ski Ball for 1 or 2, as understandable as possible. We picked bright colors because they go well with the cardboard. We tried to tilt the game, but, you see, we started off with a cardboard box. It is very hard to tilt it without ruining the box. I agree it would be an excellent idea to put in railing. But the only problem with railing is that I do not want anyone to feel isolated. We did not have enough space to put the dispenser anywhere else. The balls would never get stuck in the ticket dispenser because it is smaller and in the shape of a square.

Praise: Colorful design

Question: Should balls land in the cup rather than falling through the bottom? Might be easier for you. Should there be sides so the balls don’t fall all over the place?

Polish: It would be helpful to have point values written on the board, balls in front of person, and maybe you can put the balls in a basket.

Student Comment: I thought that the bright neon colors that we put on our game, Ski Ball for 1 or 2, brought a very cheerful feeling into the room. There are sides attached to the game so the balls inside are secure. There are also cups with the bottoms cut off. I agree with adding point values. That would be less work for the person playing and us. The balls automatically go inside our creation if the person’s shot gets in the hole. I sort of like the idea of a ball return. We also worried about the balls coming down the ball return too fast, so we did not put the balls in front of the person playing.

Examiner: Mr. Grass

Date: 2-7-13

Praise: I love the colors and the design of the game. I also like that your game can play two players at a time.

Question: How can you make the balls come out easier? Could you make the 50pt and the30pt smaller?

Polish: Maybe offer a grand prize! This will make more people play.

Student Comment: Sophia and I just thought 2 players at a time refer back to the name of our game, Ski Ball for 1 or 2. The two players added to the game would also make the game more fun, like a friendly companion! I agree that the design of the game is genius. The colors are very bright and fun! By 30 point and 50 point, do you mean the number of tickets or the point values? The easiest way that the ball return will actually work is plucking it down the ball return. I never would of thought of having a grand prize. But how would the grand prize work? Would there be multiple grand prizes?

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?

Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

I think we could have made our game, Ski Ball For 1 or 2, smaller so it could fit in my car better.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We could have asked for a smaller box instead of a large one when we began building.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned how to make an arcade game out of a cardboard box. I also learned how to manage my time. Lastly, what an orthographic design is.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

Now I know that cardboard is not an easy thing to work with, also that I have to be patient.

What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I can cooperate better than I could before.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked working with a partner. It helped me learn that everyone is different.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

I think if we had more rules it would help me learn better.

A Final Reflection:
My Crusie Arcade game was amazing, but it had a few flaws. I think that if we put guards on the side, it would work better. Also I think we could have made our game, Ski Ball for 1 or 2, smaller so it could fit in my car better for taking it home! In order to do this we could have asked for a smaller box instead of a large one when we began building. We should have used more cardboard as well. We had to do certain things to build this game. Here is the procedure. First, we thought of a game - Skee Ball. Then, we thought of a creative name, Ski Ball for 1 or 2. Next, we made an orthographic design. After that we started building. My partner and I built the basic shape of our version of Skee Ball and then we decorated it with awesome colored duct tape. Next we had different people try out our game. What I can do now that I could not before this project is that I can cooperate better than I could before. The thing I liked about the project that helped me to learn is working with a partner. It helped me learn that everyone is different. Something that could have been done differently to help my learning is if we had more rules. This was an overall amazing experience. I hope sometime in the future I could do something like this on a different game.
